ASF and COVID 19
General
we will no doubt all experience a volatile time in the meat trade this year
Sterlings wild fluctuations and brexit and and having to contend with new import documentation and the corona virus - all will add to the confusion on the supply and demand front for many months..

ASF has been the main driving force behind the price over the last few months . The disease is wide spread throughout China and eastern europe. We now of course have to handle the coronavirus problem and also what may be problems for some on being able to handle the new procedures for importing goods from Europe.
This problem has seen prices maintain a firm stance for some time.China is also still searching the world for supply continuity. However recently supplies have increased causing the price to ease a little due to restrictions on export because of the ASF problem in Germany and other suppliers. we also have volatility of supplies from European factories due to Covid 19 .
Demand is very variable due to the lock down with all restaurants and hospitality venues closed for some weeks.

we feel a slide in prices are possible from present levels especially since demand may slow for a time- however the problem of production will also figure as workers may be infected with this covid-19 virus which is at present affecting regular supplies
we are also experiencing delivery problems as many trucks are being held up due to the lack of mainly the correct documentation.
Gosh what a horrible situation to be in, trying to keep the customer base informed.
For the short term it does not look as though it is going to be easy to predict trends . However we believe as we approach april May trends will become clearer.
It is worth considering that once the restrictions are lifted there possibly will be a huge demand from restaurants and the hospitality businesses.

BRAZ CHICKEN BREAST FILLETS x 15kg HCLP
The trade experienced high prices last year - up to £3.20 plus per kg -with some financial problems and slack demand we witnessed prices dropping by well over a £ per kilo
However demand and supply as already explained could be a problem due to the above. . The sterling rate against the dollar has improvd considerably which has depressed prices further .
We feel it prudent to buy from hand to mouth as supplies at present do not seem to be a problem and now that we are out of the EU, we have to question what supplies will enter the UK without the dreaded EU tarriffs and duties
STANDARD BELLY RIBS x10 KG CARTONS
Here again the above mentioned problems are affecting prices .
Prices have risen substantially this year for good quality and semi meaty ribs and have maintained quite a stable level todate. We guess that prices will more than likely go into a small decline during the month of february .
However as we approach the summer periods we feel prices could rise significantly.. There will be demand from China and the home demand will be very sketchy until restaurants can be opened and travel can be resumed .
The unknown factor is that will prices be affected by imports from places like Canada Brazil or the USA ?
Chinese cancelled contracts due to covid affected product will affect EU prices if the product then have to be marketed within the EU
. One to watch !
CHILLED BEEF PAD
We have seen very volatile prices recently due to production problems caused by the lack of workers in the production facilities. It was highlighted when our Italian producer declared that future supplies are uncertain .
Supplies are critical presently due to the covid question and the new import restrictions .However without the normal demand we see this time of the year we have to be watchful on price rises as we feel they can be overdone short term.
One wonders if imports from places other than the EU will afect prices as the year progresses

Due to the corona virus and delivery problems associated with all the documentation that is now required clients will have to plan forward for the chilled product to prevent disappointment. However for the time being Frozen and chilled chips are available and
prices remain stable.
